From symptoms to a clear next step
Describe
Tell us where symptoms occur, when they began, and what makes them better or worse.
Evaluate
The clinician checks the injury mechanism, ligament tenderness, stability, range of motion, and ability to bear weight. X-rays may be needed to rule out a fracture.
Plan
Review the diagnosis, reasonable options, expected recovery, and when follow-up is needed.
Possible treatment options
Treatment depends on the diagnosis, health history, severity, and personal goals. Options may include:
- Protection, compression, elevation, and guided activity
- Bracing or temporary immobilization
- Rehabilitation for motion, strength, and balance
- Surgical consultation for selected severe or chronic instability
Seek urgent evaluation for deformity, numbness, a cold foot, severe pain, an open wound, or inability to take steps after injury.
